Seongsan Ilchulbong: Visiting Jeju's Sunrise Peak

Seongsan Ilchulbong is the giant volcanic crater on Jeju's east tip — a UNESCO World Heritage site and the island's most famous view. The climb is short, but the timing, the closed day and the crowds are worth knowing about first.

Quick answer

Hamdeok Beach, on the north-east coast road you'll drive towards Seongsan. Filmed by me for my YouTube channel, PROMISELAND.

1. What it is

Seongsan Ilchulbong is a tuff cone that rose out of the sea in a volcanic eruption around 5,000 years ago. From the top (about 180 m) you look down into a wide, grassy crater on one side and across to Udo and the east coast on the other. It's part of Jeju's UNESCO World Natural Heritage listing, and on a clear day it's the best view on the island for very little effort.

2. Tickets, hours and the closed day

Typical
Adult ticketAbout ₩5,000 (cards accepted)
Summer hoursAround 7:00am – 7:00pm
Winter hoursAround 7:30am – 6:00pm
ClosedSummit trail usually closed the first Monday of each month

Hours shift with the season and sunrise time, and the trail can close in bad weather. Check the official notice the week you go, especially if you're planning a sunrise visit.

3. The climb

It's a paved path and wooden stairs all the way — steep in places but not technical. Allow 20–30 minutes up and 45–60 minutes for the round trip with photos at the top. Bring water in summer: there's little shade. There's also a short free path at the bottom that leads down to the shore if you don't want to climb.

4. Sunrise or not?

Sunrise from the crater rim is spectacular on a clear morning, and the trail opens early for it in some seasons. It's also often cloudy at dawn, so don't build a whole trip around it. If you can't make sunrise, simply going before 9am means far fewer people than mid-morning, when the tour groups arrive.

5. The haenyeo divers

Below the peak, Jeju's famous haenyeo (women free-divers) give short demonstrations of their work, usually in the early afternoon. They harvest shellfish and sea urchin by hand without breathing equipment. Check times at the ticket office on the day — they depend on the weather and the sea.

6. Getting there

By car: about an hour from Jeju City along the north-east coast road, with a large paid car park at the entrance. See my Jeju car rental guide if you're still deciding.

By bus: east-bound intercity buses from Jeju City (such as the 201 coast route, or the faster express routes) stop in Seongsan town, a short walk from the entrance. It's slow but cheap.

On a tour: most east-coast day tours combine Sunrise Peak with Udo and Seopjikoji, which is the easiest way to see all three in a day without driving.
