Korea eSIM Guide: Stay Online from the Moment You Land

Maps, taxi apps, translation and booking confirmations all need data. An eSIM is the quickest way to get online in Korea — no shop, no queue, no swapping SIM cards.

Quick answer

Out exploring Jeju — you'll want maps working the whole way. Filmed by me for my YouTube channel, PROMISELAND.

1. Will an eSIM work on my phone?

Most recent iPhones, Google Pixels and Samsung Galaxy phones support eSIM. Your phone must also be unlocked — if it came on a contract, check with your home carrier. On iPhone go to Settings → General → About and look for "Digital SIM"/"Available SIM"; on Android search settings for "eSIM".

2. eSIM vs physical SIM vs pocket Wi-Fi

OptionProsCons
eSIMInstant, no pickup, keep your home SIMNeeds a compatible phone; usually data only
Physical SIMWorks on older phones; some include a Korean numberPickup at the airport counter
Pocket Wi-FiShares with a groupAnother device to charge and return

3. Do I need a Korean phone number?

Most travellers don't. Data-only plans are enough for Naver Map, KakaoMap, Papago and messaging apps. A local number helps for some Korean apps such as Kakao T taxi booking and some delivery apps — if that matters to you, choose a plan that includes one.

4. How to install it

  1. Buy your plan and open the confirmation email or app.
  2. Scan the QR code (or use in-app install) while on Wi-Fi at home.
  3. Label it "Korea" and leave it switched off.
  4. When you land, turn on the Korea line, set it for mobile data, and enable data roaming for that line.

Compare data allowances and prices for your trip length.

5. Tips for Jeju

Coverage is good across Jeju, including the coast roads and Udo; it can be patchy high on Hallasan. Google Maps won't give driving directions in Korea, so download Naver Map or KakaoMap before you go — especially if you're renting a car.

FAQ

Does an eSIM work in Jeju?

Yes. Korean networks cover Jeju well, including the coast and Udo.

When should I install my Korea eSIM?

Before you fly, while you're on Wi-Fi. Then switch it on after landing.

Can I keep WhatsApp on my home number?

Yes. Your home SIM stays in the phone, so WhatsApp keeps your usual number while the eSIM provides data.

Is unlimited data worth it?

If you use maps, video calls or social media a lot, unlimited plans remove the worry. Light users can save with a smaller plan.
